Sermon for Easter 7

In today’s gospel reading we encounter Jesus in prayer. In this prayer Jesus gives an account of his earthly mission to the Father who sent him to live among us. He prays, first for himself, and then for his disciples. And … for later believers as well. During these days of lockdown, while our church buildings have remained firmly closed, we have all been urged to continue praying to the God who is not bound by bricks and mortar. So … in the light of our encounter with Jesus in prayer, and in the context of our current situation, let me ask this: What do you pray for?Continue readingSermon for Easter 7

Sermon for Easter 4

This Sunday’s readings offer some wonderful images of the Christian life. The psalm and the gospel provide the comforting image of God caring for us as any good shepherd would care for his flock. In the reading from Acts we hear of that flock living out their Lord’s calling by sharing in prayer, teaching, fellowship and the sacred meal we were given at the Last Supper. These readings can help us channel our imaginations in the direction of true Christian commitment.Continue readingSermon for Easter 4

Sermon for Palm Sunday

In recent days we have been encouraged to stand on our doorsteps and clap loudly. … We are saying ‘Thank you’ to those who, through their various occupations, put themselves in danger of contracting the Coronavirus in order that others might continue to live their lives with some dignity, and with some semblance of ‘normality’. On Palm Sunday we remember another moment when the crowds rushed out and loudly acclaimed the way in which someone lived out their life for the benefit of others. …Continue readingSermon for Palm Sunday

We are living in strange and challenging times. We are surrounded by acts of kindness and true Christian love even though the media seems to be full of stories about selfishness and greed.
