Listen to or read a short service of Prayer for Monday 15 June 2020, the Monday after the First Sunday of Trinity.

O Lord, open our lips
and our mouth shall proclaim your praise.

God of truth,
help us to keep your law of love
and to walk in ways of wisdom,
that we may find true life
in Jesus Christ your Son.

Psalm 5.1-5

Give ear to my words, O Lord;
consider my lamentation.
Hearken to the voice of my crying, my King and my God,
for to you I make my prayer.

In the morning, Lord,
you will hear my voice;
early in the morning I make my appeal to you,
and look up.

For you are the God who takes no pleasure in wickedness;
no evil can dwell with you.
The boastful cannot stand in your sight;
you hate all those that work wickedness.

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now
and shall be for ever. Amen.

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘You have heard that it was said, “An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.” But I say to you, Do not resist an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also; and if anyone wants to sue you and take your coat, give your cloak as well; and if anyone forces you to go one mile, go also the second mile. Give to everyone who begs from you, and do not refuse anyone who wants to borrow from you.’

Matthew 5.38-42

This is the word of the Lord.

Reflection on the reading

Let us pray, in love for God our only strength, and for all his people.

Strengthen your Church, established on the firm foundation of Christ. Make her holy in all her works, seeking always the way of righteousness.

Arouse your divine compassion in the hearts of all people. Inspire in us generosity to the poor and neglected, reconciliation and trust between enemies.

Make us loving towards our neighbours, finding in each the image of Christ. Forgive us our thoughts of hostility and failures of love, and make us eager to forgive others.

Come and relieve
those who suffer through the anger of the unforgiving;
… those who are in want through the greed of the selfish;
… those who are held in the power of their own bitterness.

Grant rest to the souls who in this life made Christ their one foundation. Hold them in the peace of wrongs forgiven and enmities overcome.

Through him on whom all our hope is founded, Christ the support and strength of the faithful, we offer our prayers.

Eternal God and Father,
you create and redeem us by the power of your love:
guide and strengthen us by your Spirit,
that we may give ourselves in love and service
to one another and to you;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done;
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the power and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.

The Conclusion

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,
and the love of God,
and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit,
be with us all evermore.
