Prayer for Friday 25 February 2022

Listen to a service of Prayer for 25 February 2022 (2 before Lent; DEL Week 7: Friday)

Preparation

O Lord, open our lips
and our mouth shall proclaim your praise.

Praise

Almighty God,
give us reverence for all creation
and respect for every person,
that we may mirror your likeness
in Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Psalm 103.1-4, 8-13

Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and all that is within me bless his holy name.

Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and forget not all his benefits;

Who forgives all your sins
and heals all your infirmities;

Who redeems your life from the Pit
and crowns you with faithful love and compassion;

The Lord is full of compassion and mercy,
slow to anger and of great kindness.

He will not always accuse us,
neither will he keep his anger for ever.

He has not dealt with us according to our sins,
nor rewarded us according to our wickedness.

For as the heavens are high above the earth,
so great is his mercy upon those who fear him.

As far as the east is from the west,
so far has he set our sins from us.

As a father has compassion on his children,
so is the Lord merciful towards those who fear him.

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now
and shall be for ever. Amen.

Reading
Mark 10.1-12

Jesus went to the region of Judea and beyond the Jordan. And crowds again gathered around him; and, as was his custom, he again taught them.

Some Pharisees came, and to test him they asked, ‘Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?’ He answered them, ‘What did Moses command you?’ They said, ‘Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of dismissal and to divorce her.’ But Jesus said to them, ‘Because of your hardness of heart he wrote this commandment for you. But from the beginning of creation, “God made them male and female.” “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.’

Then in the house the disciples asked him again about this matter. He said to them, ‘Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her; and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.’

Prayers of intercession

Let us pray to God, who from the beginning has made all things for his loving purpose.

Grant to the Church grace to witness unceasingly to Jesus Christ her Lord. Empower your ministers to proclaim his lordship and the coming of his kingdom.

Take away the hardness of heart which divides families, breeds strife between people and sets nation against nation. Let the simple trust of a child draw the peoples of the world together in peace.

We pray for our families, and for all the families in our community. Protect and guide them day by day, as they look to you in faith for all their needs. Strengthen our love when we are together and when we are apart.

Have mercy on those whose lives have been broken by divorce or separation. Heal the wounds they have suffered, and grant them the spirit of reconciliation and hope for the future.

We give thanks for the departed who have entered the kingdom where there is no division but one perfect union, no strife but one perfect love. Grant us, with them, a share in your eternal kingdom.

We make our prayers in the name of Christ.

Prayer for the week

Almighty God, the fountain of all wisdom,
you know our needs before we ask,
and our ignorance in asking:
have compassion on our weakness,
and give us those things
which for our unworthiness we dare not,
and for our blindness we cannot ask,
for the sake of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done;
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the power and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.

The Grace

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,
and the love of God,
and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit,
be with us all evermore. Amen.
