Prayer for Thursday 26 March

A short service of prayer for Thursday 26 March 2020, prepared by Revd Stephen

Preparation

O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.

Hear my prayer, O Lord, and give ear to my cry;
hold not your peace at my tears.

Praise

Merciful Lord, you know our struggle to serve you:
when sin spoils our lives and overshadows our hearts,
come to our aid and turn us back to you again;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Psalm 62

On God alone my soul in stillness waits;
from him comes my salvation.
He alone is my rock and my salvation,
my stronghold, so that I shall never be shaken.

How long will all of you assail me to destroy me,
as you would a tottering wall or a leaning fence?

They plot only to thrust me down from my place of honour;
lies are their chief delight;
they bless with their mouth, but in their heart they curse.

Wait on God alone in stillness, O my soul;
for in him is my hope.
He alone is my rock and my salvation,
my stronghold, so that I shall not be shaken.
In God is my strength and my glory;
God is my strong rock; in him is my refuge.

Put your trust in him always, my people;
pour out your hearts before him, for God is our refuge.

The peoples are but a breath, the whole human race a deceit;
on the scales they are altogether lighter than air.

Put no trust in oppression; in robbery take no empty pride;
though wealth increase, set not your heart upon it.

God spoke once, and twice have I heard the same,
that power belongs to God.

Steadfast love belongs to you, O Lord,
for you repay everyone according to their deeds.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now and shall be for ever.  Amen.

Reading

John 5:31–47

Jesus said to the Jews: ‘If I testify about myself, my testimony is not true.  There is another who testifies on my behalf, and I know that his testimony to me is true.  You sent messengers to John, and he testified to the truth.  Not that I accept such human testimony, but I say these things so that you may be saved.  He was a burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light. But I have a testimony greater than John’s. The works that the Father has given me to complete, the very works that I am doing, testify on my behalf that the Father has sent me.  And the Father who sent me has himself testified on my behalf. You have never heard his voice or seen his form, and you do not have his word abiding in you, because you do not believe him whom he has sent.

‘You search the scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that testify on my behalf. Yet you refuse to come to me to have life. I do not accept glory from human beings. But I know that you do not have the love of God in you. I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not accept me; if another comes in his own name, you will accept him. How can you believe when you accept glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the one who alone is God? Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father; your accuser is Moses, on whom you have set your hope. If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me. But if you do not believe what he wrote, how will you believe what I say?’

Prayers

Let us pray to God, by whose word we are taught to pray.

Keep the Church faithful to the truth revealed in holy scripture. Enrich your people with the word of Christ, for unity of purpose and for witness to the world. Make the glory of your word shine throughout the world, to be a light to all people.

Bless those who work to make your word known among the nations. Be their support in times of trouble and their defence in times of trial.

Guide and enable us to spread the good news of salvation throughout this community. Give to all the love of your word, and bless those who are seeking you through their study of the Bible.

Look with compassion on all who are afflicted in body, mind or spirit – the sick and injured, the homeless and refugees, the lonely and rejected. Have mercy on them, relieve their distress and bring them peace.

Receive the souls of those who have died in the faith of Christ, and of those whose faith was known to you alone. Grant them eternal life in the glory of heaven.

Teach us, good Lord, to serve you as you deserve;
to give and not to count the cost;
to fight and not to heed the wounds;
to toil and not to seek for rest;
to labour and not to seek for any reward,
save that of knowing that we do your will.
Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done;
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the power and the glory,
for ever and ever.
Amen.

Conclusion

May God bless us and show us compassion and mercy.
Amen.
