Prayer for 18 September 2020

Listen to or read a service of Prayer for 18 September 2020, the Friday after the Fourteenth Sunday of Trinity

Preparation

O Lord, open our lips
and our mouth shall proclaim your praise.

The Collect for Trinity 14

Merciful God,
your Son came to save us
and bore our sins on the cross:
may we trust in your mercy
and know your love,
rejoicing in the righteousness
that is ours through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Psalm 17.1-8

Hear my just cause, O Lord; consider my complaint;
listen to my prayer, which comes not from lying lips.

Let my vindication come forth from your presence;
let your eyes behold what is right.

Weigh my heart, examine me by night,
refine me, and you will find no impurity in me.

My mouth does not trespass for earthly rewards;
I have heeded the words of your lips.

My footsteps hold fast in the ways of your commandments;
my feet have not stumbled in your paths.

I call upon you, O God, for you will answer me;
incline your ear to me, and listen to my words.

Show me your marvellous loving-kindness,
O Saviour of those who take refuge at your right hand
from those who rise up against them.

Keep me as the apple of your eye;
hide me under the shadow of your wings,

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now and shall be for ever. Amen.

Reading: Luke 8.1-3

Jesus went on through cities and villages, proclaiming and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. The twelve were with him, as well as some women who had been cured of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, and Joanna, the wife of Herod’s steward Chuza, and Susanna, and many others, who provided for them out of their resources.

Luke 8.1-3

This is the word of the Lord.

Prayers of Intercession

Let us pray to God for mercy on the Church and on all people.

Sustain your Church with faith in the power of Christ. Keep it free from the legalism that quenches the Spirit. Grant to all Christian people the assurance that Christ lives in them.

Look with mercy on the world where injustice is often done in the name of law. Fill all people with the spirit of generosity and openness to others. Restore the outcast and despised to acceptance in their societies.

In our family life, keep us always ready to receive in your name those who need our love. Give us the grace freely to forgive those who offend us in our work or social life.

Have mercy on all who are caught in debt that they cannot escape. Help them in their need and grant mercy to their creditors. Accept the sorrow of penitent sinners.

We pray for those who have died, that they may receive through the mercy of Christ forgiveness of sins and everlasting life. May we in our time be saved through faith and depart in peace.

As sinners who know their need for mercy, we pray in the name of Christ.

Prayer for the week

Into the hands of your love and mercy, O God our Father,
            we commit our lives this day:
our work and the tasks that await us;
our homes and the members of our families;
our loved ones and especially those in need.
Give to us your guidance, your strength and
            your protection, according to our needs
and throughout this and every day
            keep us abiding in your love;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done;
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the power and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.

The Grace

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,
and the love of God,
and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit,
be with us all evermore. Amen.
