Prayer for Tuesday 25 August 2020

Listen to or read a service of Prayer for Tuesday 25 August 2020, the Tuesday after the Eleventh Sunday of Trinity

Preparation

O Lord, open our lips
and our mouth shall proclaim your praise.

Praise

God of glory,
the end of our searching,
help us to lay aside
all that prevents us from seeking your kingdom,
and to give all that we have
to gain the pearl beyond all price,
through our Saviour Jesus Christ.
Amen.

Psalm 98

Sing to the Lord a new song,
for he has done marvellous things.
His own right hand and his holy arm
have won for him the victory.

The Lord has made known his salvation;
his deliverance has he openly shown in the sight of the nations.
He has remembered his mercy and faithfulness
towards the house of Israel,
and all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.

Sound praises to the Lord, all the earth;
break into singing and make music.
Make music to the Lord with the lyre,
with the lyre and the voice of melody.
With trumpets and the sound of the horn
sound praises before the Lord, the King.

Let the sea thunder and all that fills it,
the world and all that dwell upon it.
Let the rivers clap their hands
and let the hills ring out together before the Lord,
for he comes to judge the earth.
In righteousness shall he judge the world
and the peoples with equity.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now and shall be for ever. Amen.

Reading:
Matthew 23.23-26

Jesus said: ‘Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint, dill, and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. It is these you ought to have practised without neglecting the others. You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel!

‘Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup, so that the outside also may become clean.’

This is the word of the Lord.

Prayers

Son of Man, you build your Church on both the strength and frailty of your disciples. Pour out the riches of your grace, that with diverse gifts your Church may further your Kingdom. Nothing shall prevail against your will.

Son of Man, before you nations are humbled. Remove the fear that leads to oppression and contempt that diminishes human worth. Strengthen all that leads to cohesive living.

Son of Man, you bring to birth hope and new life. Bless all who work to nurture the life of this community. May all know the comfort of your tender love.

Son of Man, you fulfil the hopes and dreams of all ages. Be with all who long for relief from their suffering. Anoint us with your Holy Spirit.

Son of Man, your glory is revealed in your death and resurrection. We entrust to you all who have died. Unlock the gates of paradise that they may enter in.

God of glory,
touch our lips with the fire of your Spirit,
that we with all creation
may rejoice to sing your praise;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done;
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the power and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.

The Conclusion

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,
and the love of God,
and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit,
be with us all evermore. Amen.
