Prayer for Friday 7 August 2020

Listen to or read a service of Prayer for Friday 7 August 2020, the Friday after the Eighth Sunday of Trinity

Preparation

O Lord, open our lips
and our mouth shall proclaim your praise.

Praise

Lord God,
your Son left the riches of heaven
and became poor for our sake:
when we prosper save us from pride,
when we are needy save us from despair,
that we may trust in you alone;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Psalm 137.1-6

By the waters of Babylon we sat down and wept,
when we remembered Zion.
As for our lyres, we hung them up
on the willows that grow in that land.

For there our captors asked for a song,
our tormentors called for mirth:
‘Sing us one of the songs of Zion.’
How shall we sing the Lord’s song in a strange land?

If I forget you, O Jerusalem,
let my right hand forget its skill.
Let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth
if I do not remember you,
if I set not Jerusalem above my highest joy.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now and shall be for ever. Amen.

Reading

Jesus told his disciples, ‘If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit them if they gain the whole world but forfeit their life? Or what will they give in return for their life?

‘For the Son of Man is to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay everyone for what has been done. Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.’

Matthew 16.24-28

This is the word of the Lord.

Prayers

In peace, let us pray to Jesus our Lord, who ever lives to make intercession for us.

Jesus, Lord of the Church, empower by your Spirit all Christian people, and the work of your Church in every land.  Give us grace to proclaim the gospel joyfully in word and deed.

Jesus, Saviour of the world, be present in all places of suffering, violence and pain, and bring hope even in the darkest hour.  Inspire us to continue your work of reconciliation today.

Jesus, Shepherd and Guardian of our souls, guide and enable all who lead and serve this community and those on whom we depend for our daily needs.  Grant that we may seek the peace and welfare of this place.

Jesus, Great Physician, stretch our your hand to bring comfort, wholeness and peace to all who suffer in body, mind, or spirit.  Fill us with compassion, that we may be channels of your healing love.

Jesus, Conqueror of death, remember for good those whom we love but see no longer.  Help us to live this day in the sure and certain hope of your eternal victory.

Let us commend ourselves, and all for whom we pray, to the mercy and protection of God.

Lord, may we live in faith,
walk in love,
and be renewed in hope,
until the world reflects your glory
and you are all in all.
Amen.

Let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done;
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,

the power and the glory,
for ever and ever.
Amen.

The Conclusion

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,
and the love of God,
and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit,
be with us all evermore. Amen.
